Lori is pushing the new Clutch (art group, not the band) show this Friday:
Just a reminder that the vernissage for RUSH, Clutch's seventh group
show at the Mercury Lounge on 56 Byward (side door, upstairs) is this
Friday, December 2 (7 to 10 pm), as part of the Mercury Lounge's
monthly World Beats and Eats night. See the work of Clare Brennan,
Alain Brunet, Jim Kohan, Lori Langille, and Michael Zavacky (Zeke),
groove to live music by DJs Emily Jones and Lance Baptiste, enjoy food
from local restaurants Curries and Hot Peppers, and with a bit of luck
leave with one of the many free CD giveaways from Six Degrees Records,
too. Clutch will also be raffling off original t-shirt designs by Zeke,
as well as packages of the eagerly awaited 2006 Clutch Christmas cards,
hot off the press and featuring five different designs by each Clutch
member on the theme of Winter. Please note that there is an $8 cover
charge for this event, but as all proceeds from this night will benefit
Le Group Danse Lab, it's well worth it. Hope to see you there, as it
promises to be a great evening!
For more information about Clutch, please contact Clare Brennan
(clare@clutchart.com), Michael Zavacky (zeke@clutchart.com), or visit
our website at www.clutchart.com.

Aces of Spades
This is an awesome version of the classic Motörhead by Hayseed Dixie
Rockabilly covers of this are common, I guess. Actually, lots of bands cover this tune.

Dude Ranch at Zaphod's on Monday
Dude Ranch is playing at Zaphod's this Monday (November 28). We're the second of three bands and this is our first show so we will probably suck. Come and laugh at us anyway.

Top ten hacks according to Slashdot
the top ten hacks EVAH, according to Slashdot.
I'm not sure about number 2 - the Pathfinder didn't last longer than
expected: the engineers just said it would die early so that they'd
look good when it lasted.
Getting moving again after spending a month stuck in a divot is kinda cool, 'tho.

Dan Osman climbing Lover's Leap
Got this from Metafilter. This is a crazy video of Dan Osman
climbing a pretty sheer rock face without ropes - 400ft in 4:25!
Racing freehanded up a cliff face

RIP Chris Whitley
Chris Whitley died of cancer on Sunday. There's a great quote in this article about him:
"What I came to terms with by making some
small indie records and meeting other people who work in that way is
that, hey, if a record doesn't do blockbuster numbers, then that's OK,"
Whitley told Billboard in 2001. "I feel more comfortable with my place
in the culture now and the fact that I don't have to fear the cool
police or this cult of youth."

Sony anti-customer technology roundup and time-line
Boing Boing has been tracking
the Sony rootkit controversy. This is an awesome piece of code
found on regular Sony audio CDs that screws up your PC (Mac or Windows)
so that Sony can do what they want to it. Oh yeah - their removal
tool screws up your Windows installation. Plus it creates a huge
security hole that has already been exploited by hackers.
Thanks a lot, Sony.

This is a pretty funny short film featuring Andy Dick. Maybe not so funny if you're a fan of George Bush Junior.

Wasting Time
This is good a place as any to save some time wasting links. These are all fairly useless but entertaining:
Overheard in New York
Diamondmine (aka Bejewelled) is, like, a totally addictive flash game, dude
Get Your War On is maybe the best comic on the Net
There's a lot of comics here too
Air America is sometimes worth listening too.
You can look for songs and video on Singing Fish

Open Library
The Open Library is a place where public domain books can be found. It has a really good reader - it's just like reading a book.
Apparently Microsoft plans to add 150,000 books next year.

Bruce Sterling's Viridian List
Bruce Sterling
is one of my favourite authors. For the last few years he's also
been Pope-Emporer of the Viridian List, which is basically a blog on
eco-disasters. He is currently saying "I told you so" a lot.
He always has way too much stuff to read, but it's all pretty great. You can find it here. As a scifi guy he makes it available in all the usual ways. He also has a blog on the Wired site here.
